Going to a university out of state or city means you need to move out of your parental home. And once you decide that you need to pick a place for staying the first option for you can be the student apartment offered by the university itself. But with that comes the fear of what to expect while living there because you know you will have to share the space with some other students. However, they are humans also and as a result the same fear can be associated with the other options like sharing a house with unknown people off campus. Yet good news is that university student housing is somewhat safer and does not prove to be much hassle. And if you wish to know how a normal student’s life goes in such a place consider the pros and cons given below:
Pros:
1. Full-furnished rooms- One good thing about signing up for the student apartment is that you will not have to undergo problem of buying new bed and table for yourself because it will be already furnished. This also will eliminate hassle associated with renting a truck for moving out.
2. No electricity or gas bills- Universities charge students one time rent for the entire semester. And in this rent a fixed price is included for electricity and gas. Therefore, you will not have to worry about how much electricity or gas to use while living there.
3. You choose your roommate type- This is the best option for any student who has decided to sign up for student apartment. Once you finish living there one semester, for the next semester or year you are allowed to pick roommates for your new apartment. All you have to do is describe the personality type on the official paper and the student housing department will get you a new roommate similar to it. Additionally, if your current roommates become your favorite you can write down their names. In turn, you will be able to stay with them for another year.
4. Reporting against the annoying ones- Sometimes neighbors or roommates can cause so much trouble that it can become annoying to stay near them. Such people can be easily reported to the student housing authority and keep the apartment peaceful.
5. Everything is nearby- Student apartments are usually built close to the university. This means that classes and library will be always within reach. Consequently, you will not have to go through the hassle of getting late for the class or research.
Cons:
1. High rent price- Most often the rent of the student apartment is over ,000 for an entire semester. This means that your financial aid or subsidized loan might not be able to cover it. Thus you will need to think of other sources of income to pay for the rent.
2. Careful use of furniture- When living in a student apartment you have to use its furniture carefully. This is because the student-housing department charges a fee to the student who breaks anything in the rooms.
3. Quiet hour at night expected- Most residents are usually disciplined in a student apartment. They study all day and sleep right on time. Therefore, if you have a loud voice you will be expected to answer any calls outside of the apartment or talk softly in the room.
4. Authority’s privilege to walk in anytime- The student housing department always keeps keys of all apartments and also they have the right to walk to in anytime they think they need to. This means that not much freedom is there in the apartment.
5. Roommates with odd characters- First time experience at the student apartment might not be what you expect if one of your roommates turns out to be of odd character. Although direct hostility will not be there, indirect troubles can brew from him. Some of its examples can be dominating behavior and ignoring. The problem with them is that they are not reportable and thus you will have to stand them an entire semester.
